Around 10 to 20 thousand years ago, a star 20x the size of our sun exploded in a violent supernova explosion - expelling shells of hot hydrogen, oxygen, and other elements out into space. Estimated to be about 2,400 light years from Earth, we are seeing this explosion as it was 7,500 - 17,500 years after it happened. Seen in this image is only a small portion of the entire remnants of the supernova explosion, known as the Western Veil Nebula - a portion of what's also known as the Cygnus Loop. Imaged from my backyard, I used the HOO palette to produce this image, meaning I gathered exposures with a hydrogen and oxygen filter and assigned hydrogen to red and oxygen to blue and green to produce the color seen in the nebula.
